Sites of Community importance

A Community importance site aknowledges the EU directive so called "Habitat". It indicates an environmental area that contributes to the conservation or the refurbishment of a specific habitat, or also the refurbishment of some kind of flora or fauna, and in general, the biodiversity of a specific region.

The territory of Alberobello, includes part of two Community importance sites, the CIS "Murgia dei Trulli" and the site "Murgia di Sud-Est", respectively northward and southward from the town centre.


CIS "Murgia dei Trulli"

Included between the territories of Monopoli, Fasano, Alberobello, Castellana Grotte and Locorotondo, it's an area of 4500 hectars (17 square miles), focused on carstic cliff of the east of the south-eastern Murgia.

The scenic "Canale delle Pile", in the territory of Alberobello is included, contributing with woods of Quercus trojana and Quercus pubescens, which fringes almost the whole valley.


Recently, thanks to european funds, the entire site has been equipped with excursion trails, valuating the so called "way of water", a trail placed over the sewers tracks of Apulian Acqueduct. Please refer to our map of this site to organize your trekking or biking day.

Environmental characteristics

The landscape is characterized by the typical stone dwellings with conical roof ("trulli"). The site is characterized by the presence of oak woods of Quercus trojana and Quercus virgiliana, with a good percentage of covering and a fair condition of vegatation.

CIS "Murgia di Sud-est"


Includes a very large area of 64000 hectares (247 square miles), the municipality of Alberobello contributes with a strip of land in the south of its adminstrative land.

The peculiarities of this site are the woods of Quercus trojana and Quercus ilex in a good state of vegetation.

The town city park Bosco Selva is the most interesting biologic spot, withe quipped trails and picnic areas inside of it.

The zone has been recently enriched with bike national routes, which joins some of the close municipalities like Locorotondo, Martina Franca and Putignano and see the Bosco Selva as a crossing path or terminal point of those bike paths.

Environmental characteristics

The landscape shows mild hills with Pleistocenic calcareus stratified over Cretacic calcareus. Woods with prevalence of Oaks of Quercus trojana in good vegetation state and presences of evergreen wooded areas of Quercus ilex, some exemples of Ostrja and Carpinus. Some exempled of Quercus virgiliana.
